The project team is the heart of every project. That is why it is essential to assemble the right people together to form a team. A project manager may take into account several different criteria when putting together this team. He may consider the following skill areas when choosing the appropriate team members for a project:

  • technical skills

  • problem-solving skills

  • interpersonal skills

A project manager should maintain a broad focus when considering a person's skill set. He should keep in mind that most people do not show the strengths mentioned above in all categories evenly. An experienced project manager will know that he must make the most of the talent available. He must look for people who possess desired skills and traits while also identifying people who have the potential to learn new skills. Once the project team is assigned, their overall goals should align with organizational objectives.

According to the PMBOK Guide 6th edition, the definition of a project team is:

"A set of individuals who support the project manager in performing the work of the project to achieve its objectives."
